Research of The Caterpillar effect

French entomologist Fabre once made a famous experiment, called the "caterpillar experiment" : put a lot of caterpillars on the edge of a flowerpot, make them end to end, form a circle, not far around the flowerpot, sprinkle some caterpillars like to eat pine leaves. The caterpillars began to walk round and round the edge of the flowerpot, one after another. An hour passed, and a day passed, and another day. The caterpillars continued to walk round the edge of the flowerpot day and night for seven days and seven nights, until they died of hunger and exhaustion. John Farber had assumed before conducting his experiment that the caterpillars would soon tire of the pointless circling and switch to their preferred food. Unfortunately, the caterpillars did not. Later, scientists called this habit of following the path ahead a "follower" habit, and the phenomenon of failure caused by following the "caterpillar effect."
